Almost three months ago, President Obama awarded our very own Willie Mays with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. "It's because of giants like Willie that someone like me could even think about running for president," Obama said. Yogi Berra, one of the best catchers in history with 18 All-Star appearances and 10 World Series championships was posthumously awarded. The honor is presented "to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," according to the White House. Somehow I missed this late last November, so I wanted to make sure and post about it now, in case anyone else missed it, too. I heard Denard Span, our new starting center-fielder, talking about how excited he was to meet the Say Hey Kid yesterday. He said he wished he could talk to him before every game because he's such an inspiration. How lucky are we to have Mr. Mays amongst our boys, teaching and inspiring them?! Say Hey! So well deserved!
