Reposting ICYMI: This is the best post I've written to date (in almost 7 years!). My all-time favorite post will be the one announcing that Levi won his battle and met his hero, Buster Posey!
Good evening, Peeps! This post is longer than most, but so very worth the read! There's no game tonight so I hope you'll read this instead. Recently on this page, several regulars and I had a heated but civilized debate about the definition of the word warrior. Tonight, I'd like to introduce you to a true warrior. Let me go back a few years, before this warrior was even born to make it a bit more clear.
I remember when Buster was drafted (5th over all!) in 2008 by our beloved Giants, so I read about him and liked what I learned. In 2009, after Spring Training, he was sent to the AA farm team in San Jose, and I was thrilled because I lived near by and got to watch him in action. I knew from the word go, that he was someone special, and I quickly became his biggest fan! He only played 80 games in San Jose before being promoted to the AAA Fresno Grizzlies.
Following an injury to then starter, Benjie Molina, Buster was called up to the Show in early 9/09 and made his big league debut on 9/11/09. By sheer luck, I was at that game, and although he didn't get a hit, he threw one of his now famous rockets to 2B for a big out. The crowd went nuts, I almost lost my mind. When I got home that night, BPFZ was born!
On 6/30/10 Gerald Dempsey "Buster" Posey III was officially named our starting catcher after Molina was traded, and again, by kismet, I was at that game too! I could not believe my luck! The coincidences were just too much!
So BPFZ started out small but mighty (just like the warrior you're about to meet!) and I was convinced that I was Buster's biggest fan. As his popularity and the page both grew, I realized that Posey had a LOT of folks saying "I'm your biggest fan, Buster!" But that was cool, he earned the great admiration that was bestowed upon him at only 23 years of age!
But then came someone unforgettable. A true warrior named Levi, and he honestly loves Buster Posey more than anyone else I've ever met, including me, and that's saying a lot! I think I met my match! You can ask him anything about Buster and he'll answer you in 2 seconds flat! He perfectly imitates Buster's model batting stance, and if you'd like, he will show you the stance of every player on the team. If his family isn't sure what time a game starts, just ask Levi, he knows. If you want a stat, ask Levi, he knows. If you want to know where we are in the standings and what our magic number is, ask Levi, he knows. He truly knows it ALL!
While that is all very impressive, what's even more impressive is that Levi is only FIVE years old, and on top of that, he's been battling leukemia for close to 2 years. He's FIVE, and he's handling it better than most grown men would. This little boy and his love for his Giants has helped him deal with all the chemo, the needle pokes, the meds, the doctors, the hospital and everything else he deals with daily. One of his recent trips to the ER when he was pretty sick, the Giants were playing and he kept asking the nurses what the score was. Now that's a true and dedicated fan!
After the trade deadline passed, like many others he was very upset, and he said "first we lost Susac, then Duffy, and now Peavy is going to the bull pen." He never misses a game. He watches all the highlights on TV, and he has all of the past games on his tablet.
To make matters worse, Levi was just getting ready to play soccer with his pals last week, but Friday he fell off his scooter and rolled his foot and broke three bones. Monday he was put in a walking cast and is able to get around slowly. He had been so excited to finally do something that the other kids do, but now he'll look forward to baseball season and hope he'll be able to play then. We hope so too, Levi!
According to his grandma, who loves and adores him like crazy, "he's a little terror on the baseball field. Switch hitter, great throwing arm, it's crazy. I think when he's playing ball with his dad, he focuses on that and forgets about being sick."
His prized possessions are an autographed photo of Buster, and his #28 jersey. He says "I'm the Giants biggest little fan!"
His greatest wish is to bring his entire family of 15 to a game with him, and to meet Buster Posey in person. Sadly, due to his weakened immune system (because of the chemo) he can't sit out in general seating and would need a private box or suite. Too many germs are floating around out there!
So here's to our smallest warrior, Levi. There are all kinds of warriors, not just the brave women and men who go to war. But also brave little children who fight for their lives - often with a smile on their adorable faces! Sending great, happy thoughts, lots of prayers, and big GIANT love to brave Warrior Levi and his entire family whose hearts are overflowing with love and pride for their warrior hero! ⚾️⚽️
I hope you will take just a minute to leave a brief note for Levi, the Giants Biggest Little Fan, and his family. I'm sure he'll get a big kick out of them and his family will really appreciate it, too! ️
