The bad news: we lost. The good news: we lost no ground in the NLW. Matty gives us glimmers of his former brilliance, and then gives up 11 hits. But never give up faith in our beloved Giants! Don't stop believin'!
On a more positive note, a new bronze statue of hall of famer, RHP Gaylord Perry will be unveiled before the game tomorrow. Go early if you want to see the ceremony! Perry started his 22 year career with the Gmen, playing with us from '62-'71. He had a unique delivery, and was known as a spitballer. He is the only pitcher to win the Cy Young in both the NL and the AL.
A few of his accomplishments include: •5× All-Star (1966, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979) •2× Cy Young Award (1972, 1978) •3× Wins leader (1970, 1972, 1978) •Pitched a no-hitter on 9/17/68 •The Giants retired his number, 68
Unlike Bum, Perry did not rake! There's a great story about his hitting abilities. In his sophomore season, his manager Alvin Dark joked, "they'll put a man on the moon before he hits a home run!" Sure enough, on 7/20/69, just ONE HOUR after Apollo 11 carrying Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon, Perry hit the first home run of his career. I love that story! Do any of you remember him or were lucky enough to see him pitch? Tell us about it!
